Range now includes an AMG model for the first time

Mercedes has announced pricing and specification details for the new Mercedes GL-class. Starting at £59,465, the range is topped by the AMG 63 model, which starts at £91,680. Production will begin in January 2013.

The GL 350 BlueTEC AMG Sport is now 21mm longer and 10mm taller than its predecessor, while boot capacity has increased by 60 litres. Power derives from a 3.0-litre V6 developing 258bhp and 457lb ft of torque, giving a 0-60mph time of 7.9sec and a top speed of 137mph.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are improved from the previous generation, with a 15 per cent increase in fuel efficiency - now 35.3mpg - and a 14 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, now 209g/km.

Standard equipment levels have improved and now include bi-xenon headlamps with daytime running lights, AMG body styling, 21-inch AMG alloys, privacy glass, electric sunroof, air suspension and Park Assist.

The 5.5 litre GL63 AMG generates 557bhp and 531lb ft of torque, and will get from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 155mph. The seven-seater produces 288g/km of CO2 and returns 25mpg on the combined cycle.

The AMG variant is distinguished from the standard model by flared wheel arches; 21-inch alloys, up-rated brakes and a sports exhaust system with chrome quad tailpipes.

Interior revisions include an AMG sports steering wheel, gear-shift paddles, AMG sports seats with front and second row heating and massage functions.

Comfort and safety highlights across both models include Crosswind Assist, which applies the brakes to keep the car on course after a strong gust of wind and Collision Prevention Assist, which is now available on the GL for the first time.
