Collision car repair Peninsula - How fireman had to risk their lives driving in 1926 New York - Chilton Autobody San Carlos

On April 24, 1926, the New York Fire Department took a film camera along for a 20-minute ride as a fire chief made his way to a call — including mounting the camera so that it gave the view from the driver's seat. The resulting silent film has been bouncing around a while, but this version dubbing it "the world's oldest dash cam" gives a sense of how difficult city streets were to navigate in that era — especially when congestion from streetcars, horse-drawn carriages and kamikaze pedestrians forces the fire crew to pull a "Police Squad." Watch out for the guy who couldn't hear a fire bell if it was ringing right behind him.

Auto Body Shop San Carlos - Self-driving Lexus, Audi prototypes coming - Chilton Autobody San Carlos

Not to be outdone by a bunch of computer geeks, Toyota and Audi will reveal their own experiments in self-driving cars next week at the Consumer Electronics Show, the annual Festivus of gadgets not yet ready for primetime. Here's the first look at what Toyota will show, a Lexus LS 600h that can stop, start and steer itself. It's exactly what enthusiasts think Lexus owners have wanted for years — someone to drive for them.
Toyota says it built the 600h to "explore  autonomous technologies and high-level driver assistance systems," which may be closer to production that the gear shown here would suggest. Automatic cruise control and lane departure warning systems are already close to standard on luxury cars; several automakers also offer setups that can automatically parallel park. Mercedes has said the next-generation S-Class sedan arriving in 2014 will not only apply the brakes if it senses an imminent crash, but take over steering as well.
All of these technologies will take years to perfect, which is why Google's self-driving car team lobbied for the right to test on public roads in California and Nevada. While Google has said it was interested in working with automakers to build its systems, automakers may prefer to develop their own technology rather than rely on an outside supplier who's never built devices meant for safety-critical use.

Collision Car Repair San Francisco - Flying Car Highway Crash in Russia [Video] - Chilton Auto Body San Francisco

The traffic in Russia is not the safest place to be and we’re now back with a video that perfectly demonstrates this. The clip brings us an accident that took place on December 19 in Moscow.

As you can see in the video, which was posted by Youtube user MrCuriousAlex, a car that was traveling on the Lenin Prospekt overpass went flying off the road and landed in a traffic jam, damaging multiple other vehicles. The drivers that were sitting calmly in their cars have no idea what’s coming and in a few moments the disaster is over.

The crash was captured by a dashboard-mounted camera from a car that was in the jam, but was not involved in the crash. At the moment, there are no other details of the event available.

Collision Car Repair Pleasanton - Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Crashed into SLS AMG by Journalists - Chilton Auto Body Pleasanton

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Crashed into SLS AMG by Journalists

Test driving cars is serious business, with this activity implying a lot of risks. Fortunately, most unpleasant experiences can be avoided by displaying a combination of attention and a light right foot. Unfortunately, these ingredients aren’t always present and this sometimes leads to crashes, with the latest example of this being a very painful one.

It all happened in China, where two journalists were reviewing two go-fast Mercedes models during the SLS AMG Trak Xperience event. This took place on the Zhuhai International Circuit and unfortunately included a crash between a C63 AMG and a SLS AMG.

The red SLS AMG was in front, with the driver violently stepping on the brakes before a corner. Behind the supercar, another journalist was driving a gunmetal grey C63 AMG and failed to stop on time, rear-ending the supercar.

We don’t know if this was due to an improper distance between the two cars or lack of attention, but, as you can see in the adjacent images, both vehicles were damaged in the accident. The good side, if there is such a side in all this, is that neither of the journalists involved in the crash were injured.

Auto Body Car Repair Pleasanton - Man drives Rolls-Royce for 78 years then makes museum donation to ensure its preservation - Chilton Auto Body Pleasanton

Mr. Allen Swift died in 2005 at the impressive age of 102, but his automotive story is even more remarkable. Not only is the gentleman credited with owning a Rolls-Royce automobile longer than anyone else in the world, but he had the forethought and funds to ensure its future preservation after his death.

In 1928, while living in Springfield, Massachusetts, Swift's father gave him a 1928 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly P1 Roadster as a graduation present (Springfield and Rolls-Royce have a history – from 1920 to 1931, the British automaker built 2,944 vehicles in the city as part of its attempt to establish a US plant). The young man was passionate about his green-over-green softtop convertible, not only driving it on a regular basis, but maintaining it meticulously over the decades (the two door-received a complete body-off restoration and engine rebuild in 1988).

Rolls-Royce acknowledged Mr. Swift in 1994, awarding him a crystal Spirit of Ecstasy award for his length of ownership. By 2005, Swift had logged more than 170,000 miles on its analog odometer and he was recognized as the oldest living person to have owned a car from new. He passed away that year.

But the story doesn't end there. Swift left the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History a $1 million gift to create a new exhibition to care for his roadster and tell the story of Rolls-Royce manufacturing in the Massachusetts town. Today, Mr. Swift's beautiful Piccadilly P1 Roadster is prominently displayed in the museum's Transportation Collection.

Collision Car Repair San Bruno - Motorcycle Crashes into Lamborghini Aventador in Italy - Chilton Auto Body San Bruno

Motorcycle Crashes into Lamborghini Aventador in Italy

When news surfaced that a teenager had been involved in a Lamborghini Aventador crash,  immediately thoughts went to a 22 year old Saudi Arabian student who bought one of the first examples for $461,000, a $71,000 premium over the regular price.

But no, this accident took place in Italy, at the mecca of speed called Imola. The impact between the motorcycle and Italian exotic car was not severe and the rider probably only got a scraped need. However, from what is understood from a local report, he fled the scene.

The orange Lambo has probably heading towards the racing track at Imola, where it would race Ferraris and McLarens. But after police cordoned off the area and examined the crash, all the teenage driver managed to do that day is to create a spectacle, as 30 or so people gathered by the side of the street to watch the spectacle.

The damage looks minimal, but compared to that cheep-looking bike it’s no laughing matter.

Auto Body Car Repair San Bruno - How many other cars does it take to kill a Volvo? - Chilton Auto Body San Bruno

We all know how safe Volvo cars are, but a European junkyard has decided to put it to the test by crashing, jumping and rolling the life out of an 850 wagon. While government tests use automated systems to crash new cars, the guys in this video do so with a driver behind the wheel. Aside from what looks like a safety harness and roll bar for the driver, it seems like this car is otherwise bone stock.

Not wanting to spoil the fun for you, we'll just point out that at the start of the video, our hero car looks pretty flawless, and by the end, well, let's just say the Craigslist ad for the car would say "needs some body work." Check out the video below to watch some stunts that even the Duke Boys might shy away from.

Collision Car Repair Burlingame - Watch Motor Trend give the 2013 SRT Viper a thrashing - Chilton Auto Body Burlingame

SRT Viper

It's no secret the boys and girls at Motor Trend don't look at the 2013 SRT Viper through rose-tinted lenses. After all, the publication recently chose the Corvette ZR1 over the new supercar from Chrysler, saying the Chevrolet was easier to drive quickly. That's bad news given there's a new Corvette coming down the pike. But until now, we haven't been able to watch Motor Trend give the Viper a proper thrashing. Carlos Lago hopped behind the wheel of the V10-powered bruiser to give the machine a once-over.

While Chrysler has made big waves about the Viper's improved interior, Lago wasn't too impressed, saying there's plenty of the old car in the cabin. With a pedal box pushed toward the driver's side, a rough ride and a noisy cockpit, MT found that the Viper lags behind its European counterparts, but there's certainly no arguing against the machine's straight-line thrust. The magazine managed to rip off a 3.4-second 0-60 mph time during testing.

In the end, Lago finds that the Viper still earns its brutish reputation, but is somewhat more controllable. Check out the review for yourself below, including a segment with pro Randy Pobst at Laguna Seca.

Auto Car Body Repair Burlingame - Can a Jaguar XKR-S be drifted while blindfolded? - Chilton Auto Body Burlingame

Bring together a 550-horsepower Jaguar XKR-S and a rain-soaked skidpad, and it's almost impossible to not end up in a sideways drift... accidental or on purpose. With that in mind, the gang over at Autocar got a hold of the monstrous XKR-S for the latest installment of "Will it Drift?," only they raised the stakes a little by attempting the feat with a blindfolded driver

We've driven the XKR-S a number of times here at Autoblog (including a First Drive, Review and Quick Spin), so we weren't at all surprised to learn that blind drifting in the car is possible. But what is remarkable is the ease at which it happened. This, of course, can be credited as much to the car as to the driver, Steve Sutcliffe. Check out the impressive video for yourself, which is posted after the jump.

Auto Car Body Repair San Rafael - Hyundai working to replace car keys with smart phones - Chilton Auto Body San Rafael

Hyundai smartphone for car keys

Hyundai is working on technology that may allow you to access your vehicle with nothing more than a swipe of your smartphone. The automaker's i30 Connectivity Concept boasts an embedded NFC tag that allows the user to open the doors with a quick swipe. Drop the phone in the center console, and the driver can pair with the on-board touch screen and start the car. An inductive charging plate takes care of keeping the phone alive without having to fuss with cords or adapters. What's more, Hyundai says that the system can recognize individual smartphones, which means each user can have a customized experience.

Using the company's MirrorLink, the car can automatically sync not only contacts and apps, but also navigation destinations and streaming audio. More interestingly, the system uses technology available right now, and Hyundai says the system will be available on its next-generation of vehicles starting in 2015. While we're all for sending bulky key fobs to the scrap heap, hurdles like previous owner security concerns and the hitch of what happens if your phone dies before you can make it to your car will need to be overcome. Auto Car Body Repair San Rafael - Ferrari 599 GTB Crashed into Pickup - Chilton Auto Body San Rafael

Ferrari 599 GTB Crashed into Pickup

This is a bad year for the 599 GTB. The great Italian stallion with its 620 horsepower V12 is being put out to pasture. In its place, the supercar world is getting something new, the F12 Berlinetta, infused with 458 Italia genes and offering a scarcely believable 740 horsepower.

So with its replacement clearly determined, the once all-conquering car is feeling threatened. Realizing it’s no match, it’s kicking and bucking to make sure it’s still got its owner’s attention.

This particular Fiorano got into a bit of trouble as it reportedly got cut off by another car in Houston, Texas. It then crashed into a pickup truck, which badly damaged the left front side. The bonnet, wing and bumper were all torn of.

The repairs could prove to be quite costly, seeing as the engine and chassis were also affected.

Auto Body Repair San Francisco - Another cool projection vid, this time with a Porsche 911 - Chilton Auto Body San Rafael

Porsche 911 Projection Video

Porsche has become the latest automaker to take advantage of clever projection technology. The automaker worked up a quick presentation for the 2013 911 Carrera 4S to show off a bit of "motionless driving." The display tracks the sports car from production to back-road caning and city-center cruising, displaying a variety of exterior color choices and wheel options without resorting to a two-dimensional video.

This isn't the first time we've seen an automaker use its new product as a projection screen. Subaru, Hyundai, Lamborghini and others have all done the same, and the trick never fails to be visually interesting.
You can check out the projection video below.

Collision Car Repair San Francisco - Meet the Smart Fortwo that should be competing in the 2013 Dakar Rally [w/video] - Chilton Auto Body San Francisco

When it comes to specialty applications of the Smart Fortwo, "off-road motorsports" may seem about as likely as "amphibious assault vehicle." Yet a team has come up with just that (the former, not the latter), creating a rally-ready runabout dubbed the Smart Dakar.

The team used a Fortwo to create a "Smart Buggy 4x4." The creator's website claims that the vehicle is in compliance with FIA regulations, and weighs only 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds). As the name suggests, the intent of this vehicle is to compete in the Dakar Rally, and it looks the part.

It may be the most hard-nosed Smart that you'll ever find, but it has an uphill battle to make it to competition. The race team, headed by Jose Luis "JL" Alvarez, does not have the funds to field a full assortment of vehicles, including two Smarts and a Honda CRF-450, and now all plans have been canceled for this year's Dakar Rally.

JL even appealed to his fans via a YouTube video with the hopes of crowd-funding the project, though it appears that attempt has failed. At any rate, the 2013 Dakar Rally starts January 5 in Lima, Peru, and ends January 20 in Santiago, Chile, and it appears that this team, with its unique ride, will not be attending.

Collision Repair Bay Area - GM's Ed Welburn brings vintage Corvettes by Jay Leno's Garage - Chilton Auto Body San Carlos

There're still a couple more weeks until everyone gets the first official look at the next generation of the Chevrolet Corvette with the all-new C7, but Ed Welburn, Vice President of General Motors Global Design, recently hung out with Jay Leno to show off a quartet of classic 'Vettes of historic importance. Corvette fans will definitely want to check out the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage.

Three of the four cars reside in the GM Heritage Center, and the fourth is owned by none other than GM president Dan Akerson who plans to auction off his mint 1958 Corvette at Barrett-Jackson next month to raise money for the Habitat for Humanity in Detroit. Leno also got to check out a fully restored 1953 Corvette, of which less than 1,000 were ever built, in addition to the highly desirable 1963 split-window. The true gem of this collection, though, is the 1959 Stingray racecar that was driven by Elvis Presley, heavily influenced the styling of the C3 'Vette (as well as the C7 according to Welburn), first use of the "Stingray" name on a Corvette and Leno referred to it as "the rarest, most valuable Corvette there is."

Check out the video posted after the jump to hear both guys talk about the iconic sports cars, which includes Welburn describing where the split-window design came from and listen to Leno start up the '59 Stingray.

Auto Body Repair San Carlos - Car Crash: Lamborghini Gallardo Wrecked in Germany - Chilton Auto Body San Carlos

Lamborghini Gallardo Wrecked in Germany
Winter hit Europe quite heavily last week. An unfortunate victim was this Lamborghini Gallardo which hit a guard rail on the A45 near Freudenberg. German newspaper, Rhein Zeitung reports that the driver had been heading towards Dortmund, travelling a little too fast for the conditions, and had simply lost control.
Fortunately both driver and passenger walked away uninjured. The accident serves as a reminder that, even with a permanent four wheel drive system and winter tyres, it pays to be careful during snowy weather.

Auto Body Repair Pleasanton - Bride wrecks groom's Ferrari 458 on their wedding day - Chilton Auto Body Pleasanton

Ferrari 458 Italia crashed by bride after wedding

A fresh bride has crashed her husband’s Ferrari 458 Italia right after the wedding after he let her take it for a spin.

Most fresh brides are usually getting ready to go on honeymoon right after their weddings but in this particular case, the woman has crashed her husband’s Ferrari 458 Italia right after the “big day”. The groom let his new wife take the Italian supercar for a spin but that was a bad decision because she drove it right into the hotel wall quite quickly and the result was what you can see in the image posted above. The incident took place in Tadley Hampshire, England. I bet that they didn’t get to enjoy their honeymoon.

A Ferrari 458 Spider has been recently crashed in Mallorca, Spain after the driver lost control of the wheel on a straight section of the road and hit the guardrail.

It is inevitable where ever there will be exotic cars there will also be exotic car crashes and the latest example of such an unfortunate incident is coming all the way from Spain, where a Ferrari 458 Spider has definitely seen better days. The driver and his brother have picked up the Italian supercar in question from a Ferrari dealership and after just two hours of driving he lost control of the wheel slamming the 458 Spider into the guardrail and stopping it into a cliff.
